Surveillance and monitoring are widely acknowledged as critical components of the response to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and are one of the five strategic priorities of the Global Action Plan (GAP) on AMR. Through surveillance, countries can detect the emergence of AMR and collect the data on AMR prevalence and antimicrobial use (AMU)3 necessary to guide patient treatment, identify populations at risk, inform policy development and assess the impact of interventions.
